The fantail is a very ancient breed of pigeon whose origin is not completely certain. India is believed to be the ancestral homeland for the fantail, which eventually found it's way to Europe through the hands of merchants. The appearance of the Fantail of this period was quite different from that of today. Small, scoopy tails, feathered legs and feet, crests and little or no upheaval of the chest when in motion was the norm at this time. It was only when the English and Scottish breeders began to refine the Fantail into a show breed that we began to see the modern style. Although originally different, the English and Scottish types were blended to create what we would call the Fantail as we know it. During the 19th Century, Americans began to import these birds and the Fantail Fancy began in the United States. In July of 1896, the founding members of the EFC gathered in New York and formed what was then called the Fantail Club of America. The EFC has held a prominent role in the development of the Fantail for exhibition every since and continues to lead the way into the 21st Century. Current goals for the EFC include creating greater interest in breeding Fantails by providing quality breeding stock for newcomers, publish top quality informative bulletins covering a wide range of topics, and sponsor several shows yearly with a comfortable, laid back atmosphere while providing stiff competition in the judging pens. The development of new colors and patterns is also a priority with several members working to this end to provide a greater choice of colors to breeders in the future. |
